Part 3 of an 8-part discussion handout.
Keeping their inner flame alive
It is not that we are trying to create ‘geniuses’.
There is no gentleness in that ambition.
What we want is to keep alive
the extraordinary sensitivity of the baby,
their innate curiousity, intelligence,
love and wisdom.
These are not things we need to teach children.
They have an inner teacher
one who is older and wiser than us.
But as our world has become more complex,
As things made by human hands
begin to dominate the landscape,
the child’s inner teacher needs our help.
They need a specially prepared environment
One that is simpler, less complex,
One in which they are free to act intelligently.
And to act is, above all else, to move.
What helps intelligent movement?
There are three things we will look at to begin.
1. Uninterrupted movement time.
2. Materials organised on a low shelf.
3. The floor bed.
