What stops cells from just growing and growing?

This is an old classic video on relative sizes in the Universe.

Possible activities:

  1. Make a booklet / poster or art installation of sizes going up in powers of 10.
  2. Make a graph of Volume versus Surface areas for the following solid shapes: cube, sphere, cylinder (varying height; varying diameter). Describe the conclusion you can draw from each graph. Compare graphs and describe your conclusion.
  3. E. Coli divides every 20 minutes. Starting with one, and assuming an infinite food source, how many would we have in a week? Graph the growth by hourly intervals.
